The family was riding on Milperra Road in Milperra at 7:40 p.m. on Sunday when, according to police, dashcam evidence shows the driver turning right at an intersection before getting struck by an approaching Toyota Hilux.

The male driver, 52, and the other three occupants were trapped when the vehicle rolled.

Both Thai Duong, 41, and Hailie, his daughter, who was seated in the rear car, passed away at the scene. Duong’s nine-year-old son was one of the other passengers in the backseat. He was brought to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead by paramedics and was still in critical condition on Monday afternoon.

Hailie was a sixth-grader at Bankstown’s St. Brendan’s Catholic School. According to a Sydney Catholic Schools spokesman, the loss of Hailie and her father stunned and grieved the community.

The sedan’s driver was transported in critical but stable condition to Westmead Hospital.

The 19-year-old driver of the ute was brought to Liverpool Hospital for required testing after sustaining minor injuries.

The police crash investigation squad investigated the crash’s cause while setting up a crime scene.

The ride-share vehicle’s dashcam footage was reviewed by NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden, who stated that the police believe the driver should not have made the right turn.

Both drivers’ speeds are under investigation by the police.

According to McFadden, the collision was a “driver responsibility issue” when questioned about the possibility that traffic lights at the intersection malfunctioned.

“The driver must drive with this obligation as their primary focus. Too frequently, we witness drivers making mistakes and not being as alert as they should be. Drivers have responsibility for their actions. They’re not treating their responsibilities with the seriousness they ought to,” he remarked.

McFadden stated that following 12 traffic fatalities in the previous nine days, police were angry with some drivers’ actions on NSW roadways.

It was asked that anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage come forward.

A DiDi representative attested to the company’s knowledge of the tragic event.

“DiDi will cooperate with law enforcement as it looks into the occurrence. We will offer support where it is available and our thoughts are with the people affected by this incident and those involved,” the statement stated.
